I wish this awesome girl hero had come along when I was even younger- but even in college years she was inspiring. When did we ever see such a kick ass heroine in space? Leia opened the door for Ellen Ripley of Aliens, Captain Janeway, even Buffy.

When Carrie Fisher wrote Postcards from the Edge, I was really surprised. She was so amazingly candid for movie royalty. When she came out as manic depressive, I was thrilled. Maybe we could finally talk about it like any other illness. May you can be brilliant, creative and flawed. Even crazy. And it’s okay.
When I saw The Force Awakens, the reunion of Leia and Han was a kick in the heart – a good one, but full of real life angst. No fairytale romance for them -clearly they gave it a go, but grew apart. Years of gritty revolution took it’s toll, of course they’re battle weary.
Thank you, Carrie
For the inspiration, for the laughs, and most of all for permission to tell it like it is.
Some words of wisdom from Carrie Fisher
“I feel I’m very sane about how crazy I am.”
“Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. ”
“There is no point at which you can say, ‘Well, I’m successful now. I might as well take a nap.”
I had to share these great photos of burrowing owls, a critter I used to know when I lived in South Florida.
One thing that makes owls so appealing to us is their big eyes. The feather markings around the eyes also create what seem like human expressions. I see the same phenomenon in Tabby cats; their ‘mascara’ and facial markings give them striking expressions.
But these owls, they have great body language as well! Check them out:
Is that little owl yawning or singing? Belgian-based photographer Yves Adams has the answer as he’s the one behind the adorable shot. “Little owls are CUTE!,” he states. “They make you laugh with whatever they do! But when they start to yawn, my heart melts! This picture has been taken in Spain, with the help of Steve West. This is probably the male, who was clearly bored, while the female was in the nest on her eggs.”
Today, we bring you over a dozen photos that show you just how expressive owls can be. Whether it’s the way they tilt their heads or walk with attitude, you have to agree, they’re one photogenic bunch.
Sometimes I feel like I’m living in a science fiction movie. I was enjoying our writer’s group meeting at the (staid) public library, when two friends walk in. Nothing too unusual, aside from their costumes: red jackets, big sunglasses, and shiny hats made from colanders and foil. They are walking stiffly, like robots. With fists full of flowers. It’s as is Trudy from Search for Intelligent Life had sent her friends on a mission. To deliver cake, studded with pipe cleaners and flowers.
CAKE! Did I need cake? In preparation for the sugary holiday treats, I brought strawberries (thank god!). Gwen brought cookies. Kay arrived with her usual witticisms wondering aloud if she brought cookies would it distract us from noticing she hadn’t accomplished her writing goals. And then there’s cake.
Our meeting leader did a magnificent job of reclaiming our attention, distracted as we were by the sweet treats. We did manage to share our work and glean inspiration for our future efforts. (For more info on the writers group, go here)
My life is populated with colorful, creative characters, brilliant, loving people who weave their creative joy through my life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
And if I see little green men on the way home, I won’t bat an eye.
