Book Design

Book design for self-published writers

“You shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover,” goes the adage. But we do! The nonverbal messages on a book’s cover give you a mood, a tone, a feeling and suggest subject matter in a matter of seconds.

My book cover designs are usually deep saturated colours with luminous typography and images. I’m an artistic painter, and have a great love of color, and deploy it to create emotion and drama.

Interior Design

Some will tell you that a word processing program is sufficient for laying out a book’s pages. In my expereince, those programs do not give you the subtle control over text and spacing required to make a book look thoroughly professional. I’ve been designing printed material for many years, everything from postcards, theatre tickets, flyers, sophisticated brochures, suites of related prouct literature, catalogs and directories with thousands of entries in tables, and of course, books.

Typography, like the cover, a subliminal message about the tone and attitude of the book. Do you want your book to feel technical? academic? lyrical? practical? mysterious? There are fonts and styles to send the appropriate message.

Beautiful interior design considers the front and rear matter, body text and it’s subsets (like setting off quotations, or songs or prayers, or lists, etc.) There should be headings and footers that keep the reader clued in to where they are in the book. the chapter or section headings and first page are critical to setting the stage for the next step in your story.

If you are a self publishing author and wish to discuss book design, please drop a note, text or call for a free consultation.

Ebook design is also available, as is production assistance with publishing platforms such as Ingram Spark.
